President. I call to the attention of my colleagues a very important study that has recently been concluded which concerns pending legislation in the Senate Judiciary Committee . This legislation would suspend the deportation of all Salvadorans who are presently in the United States in an illegal immigration status. The study is the most thorough and conclusive to date concerning Salvadorans who are returneddeportedto El Salvador. and it demonstrates that S. 377 is wholly and assuredly unnecessarya most inappropriate and very misguided piece of legislation. Indeed. it is just that. The Intergovernmental Committee on Migration [ICM] is a wellrespected international refugee organization which has participated in many of the international refugee assistance efforts that the United States has been involved in over many yearsincluding the resettlement of over 700.000 Indochinese refugees in the United States over the last 10 years. Representatives of this fine organization have been meeting Salvadoran deportees at the San Salvador Airport since December of 1984 and then assisting them in resettling in their native provinces. ICM has also been closely monitoring the security of those returned Salvadorans through mailed questionnaires and onsite visits to those persons who did not return a questionnaire.
