They say we should let Mexico sink or swim on its own. But we cant turn our backs. Cultural and social ties are too strong. The humanitarian urge that prompts us to give food. medicine. and clothing to Mexicos poor is too strong. And it is clearly in our national interest to help Mexico. Political instability and a weak economy encourage the illegal immigrants to seek scarce jobs in the USA. The 1.900mile border. now largely undefended. would be nearly impossible to protect if Mexico became a hostile nation. Rather than insulting Mexico. we should cooperate to improve the lot of both our nations.
