Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990245812

Not only is Aaron Copland a great composer. but he took the time as a teacher. critic. and author. to help more than one geneation of new American musicians. Musical festivals. foundations. and organizations he founded or participated in provided training grounds on which new talent could learn. practice. and flower. His books and lectures have assisted the average listener to better appreciate music. and the advanced student to master the complexities of composition. As we celebrate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty this year. it is so very appropriate that we honor the son of an immigrant for his outstanding contributions to Americas musical heritage. How prototypical it is the child of Lithuanina Jewish immigrants should have produced music so distinctively American. Mr. Speaker.
