The United States should provide full political. economic. and. where necessary. military support to the emerging democracies of the region. We cannot force the Sandinistas to change their domestic policies. That will be up to the Nicaraguan people. who have no more in common with the Soviets than their Guatemalan and Honduran neighbors do. The sooner they stop thinking of the United States as their enemy. the sooner they will lose patience with policies that restrict their freedom. Mr. President. I have gone to a number of refugee camps in Central America. I spoke to the people who have been displaced. They have lost their families. because of this war. lost everything they have.
