Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990232587

I was fortunate to have had an opportunity to travel to the Soviet Union with several of my colleagues from the Committee on Science and Technology. One of the most profound experiences that I encountered on this trip was our meeting with Soviet refuseniks. We were able to spend several hours with a dozen refuseniks at the home of Prof. Yakov Alpert. Professor Alpert and his wife first applied for permission to emigrate in 1975. Subsequently. they both lost their jobs. and Professor Alpert has been completely cut off from the international science community. Dr. Aleksandr Lerner. one of the Soviet Unions most respected scientists. also attended the meeting.
