Sakharov. an outspoken critic of Soviet human rights violations. was banished to the closed city of Gorky in 1980. He and his wife. Dr. Elena Bonner. a founding member of the Moscow Helsinki Group. continue to be harassed by the Soviet secret police. There has been no word of the couples wellbeing since Bonner returned to internal exile in early June. Shcharansky. also a founding member of the Moscow Group. spent more than 9 years in the Soviet gulag because of his activism. particularly with regard to Jewish emigration. Despite these hardships. they remain steadfast in their defense of individual human rights. Regrettably. their cases are not isolated instances of abuse.
