Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990220777

Speaker. it is altogether fitting that the House pause to formally commemorate the heritage of millions of Americans of Polish heritage. and to reflect on the ties that bind this Nation with the people of Poland. It is well known how our Nation was significantly aided at its birth by the Polish revolutionary heroes Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko. In more recent years. waves of Polish immigrants contributed in important ways to the development of our Nation as an industrial and agricultural giant. Beginning In 1980. the people of Poland stood up bravely for their human rights to determine their own destiny. under the prayerful eyes of the world. The people of the United States. and especially the PolishAmerican community. watched as Solidarity. the independent trade union movement. rose and then was crushed at the insistence of the Soviet Union.
