Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990218482

Mr. Speaker. having recently returned from a visit to the Soviet Union where I came into direct contact with individuals that are denied the right to emigrate and live as they choose. I am firmly convinced that it is necessary that we continue to raise the issue of human rights at every opportunity and every contact with Soviet officials. In meeting with Soviet refuseniks. I was distressed to learn of the various inequities and injustices they are subjected to simply because they have declared their wish to leave the Soviet Union for countries where they can worship freely and speak without fear of persecution and harassment.
