Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990213689

Many had come to this country searching for freedom. opportunity. and security. The tradeunion movement offered these men the opportunity for making a living. while expressing their hopes. realizing their dreams. and bringing themselves and their families comforts that were unheard of in their homeland. However. like many other immigrants. the original members of Local 1 were disappointed with some of the conditions in the leather goods industry. Workers. often including children. labored up to 60 hours a week for the meager pay of $5 a week. To the union member of today. those unsanitary and often dangerous conditions the original members met are difficult to Imagine.
