Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990202559

I submit that even if Nicaragua were to be liberated from communism tomorrow morning. the country has lost one or two generations of its educated productive sector. These are the very people any country must have in order to advance the free enterprise system and create economic growth and prosperity. What lies before us. then. is either a Communist Nicaragua. slowly and systematically spreading communism in Central and South America. or a liberated Nicaragua whose economy has regressed to the level of the 1940s with no real prospect for development for decades to come. A similar situation is to be found in the case of immigrants from El Salvador. and. to a lesser extent. from Guatemala. So far. Honduras.
