Mr. President. the ongoing national debate about proposed restorations at Ellis Island has brought forth suggestions from every quarter. but. unhappily. not many solutions. There are a number of buildings on the island. all in a state of serious disrepair. The main building. through which some 12 million hopeful immigrants entered the United States. is now being restored. Few complain about the nature or intent of that effort. But a great deal of argument does yet surround plans for what to do with the rest of the place. After considering the various possibilities. including the addition of a luxury hotel or a kind of ethnic museum and shopping mall. it becomes very clear that we need and ought not rush to construction.
