In fact. because of my deep concern about this matter I convened a meeting in my office on May 7 which was attended by Justice Department officials and several members of my Judiciary Committee. At that time. we were advised that an investigation was ongoing but that a final conclusion had not been reached by the Justice Department as to whether Mr. Waldheim is exludable under the provisions of our immigration law proscribing the admission on Nazis and Nazi collaborators. In fact. during that meeting. the Justice Department denied that a final recommendation had been made by the Office of Special Investigations to place Mr. Waldheim in the Lookout book which contains the names of all persons who may be subject to exclusion. Some press reports had indicated that the Office of Special Investigations had made a recommendation to the Department of State that Mr. Waldheim be included in the automated visa Lookout system. During the meeting we were merely told that additional evidence was being reviewed and that any OSI decision was subject to review by other entities in the Justice Department. On the following day.
