Fred Schmidt Packing Co. in 1886. and evolved into Schmidts Sausage Haus Restaurants. Schmidts restaurants are famous for their homemade meats. sausages. and pastries. In addition to producing fine food. the Schmidt family is known for its tradition of civic and community involvement spanning five generations. Today. Schmidts has grown to four restaurants serving its culinary delights to thousands of Columbus area residentscertainly an American success story given Schmidts beginnings back in 1886 when the J. Fred Schmidt Packing Co. was founded at 253 East Kossuth Street. This meat packing plant was the brainchild of a new partnership formed between a young German immigrant. J. Fred Schmidt and Lew Barnhart.
