It is ironic. that just as she was preparing to return to a closed life in the closed city of Gorky. Anatoly Shcharansky. the recently freed Soviet dissident. was beginning his first trip to the United States. For those of us who had the pleasure and honor to meet with Mr. Shcharansky. his joy at being free was patently obvious. even after a grueling schedule. But at the same time. he made it very clear that while enjoying his new life in Israel. he will relentlessly campaign for the right of the 400.000 Soviet Jews who wish to emigrate. and for the thousands of dissidents who remain in Soviet prison camps.
