But we must pause and reflect. however. for we only revel in a victory of the moment. The release of Anatoly Shcharansky cannot be the end of the struggle. but the beginning of an even greater one. We must ask ourselves what the future holds for the thousands of Soviet Jews who also wish to emigrate. Unfortunately. Mr. Shcharanskys release may not portend a change in status for the majority of Soviet Jews. All indications are that the Soviet Union will continue its maltreatment and imprisonment of Jews. as well as its highly restrictive emigration policy. Perhaps the release of Mr. Shcharansky has given us some cause for hope.
