Avital is to be commended for her outstanding achievementgaining freedom for a fellow human being. Her determination and her devotion exceeds all known bounds. Let us honor Anatoly and Avital Shcharansky in their struggle for freedom to maintain their Jewish identity and live in peace. As we celebrate this day. let us not forget the thousands of others. such as my adopted refusenik Dr. Yuri Tarnopolsky. who remain in the Soviet Union commiting no crimes other than endlessly awaiting permission to emigrate to Israel. Let us vow to redouble our efforts on behalf of those who remain behind the Iron Curtain.
