Early this year. we watched with joy and relief as Natan stepped across Kleinicke Bridge to the freedom which had been his dream during the long years of harassment. interrogation. isolation. and imprisonment. He had been convicted of treason. espionage. and agitation against the Soviet Union. His socalled crime was to speak out for human rights and the rights of tens of thousands of Jews who wished to emigrate from the Soviet Union. Just a few days ago. here in the Capitol Rotunda. he greeted us as his "accomplices in crime". and challenged us to continue together our "criminal" activities in pursuit of justice and individual liberty. I am honored to stand in his company.
