Shcharansky has come home to Israel. and he is free to travel as he likes. but the plight of Soviet Jews persists. On July 14. 1978. Mr. Shcharansky was convicted of treason. espionage and antiSoviet agitation. No one in the West believed these charges. and it was clear that the Soviet authorities had singled him out because he was a courageous and outspoken activist on behalf of Jewish emigration. Mr. Shcharansky came out of his ordealthe prolonged interrogation. threat of execution. eight years in prison and labor camp. tortures of cold and hunger. months in solitary confinement. years without mail or visiting rightsin remarkable physical and mental condition.
