His courageous refusal was nothing less than inspirational. The release of the most celebrated refusenik. Anatoly Shcharansky. is a wonderful gesture by Moscow. but it is not nearly enough. The numbers continue to paint an awful picture. In 1979. the Soviet Union allowed over 51.000 Jews to emigrate. In the last 2 years combined. just over 2.000 Soviet Jews have been given permission to emigrate. Yet. the number who want to get out has not diminished. and the demand for freedom grows even larger. The numbers are not the only sign of continued persecution of Jews in the Soviet Union.
