Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990185140

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Natan (Anatoly) Shcharansky to the United States and to our Capital. Mr. Shcharansky has been a leader in the emigration of Soviet Jews. He was also a founder of the Moscow Helsinki Monitoring Group. The plight of Soviet Jewry is of national importance. In late July 1984. the Soviet Union began a substantial crackdown on Hebrew teachers and Jewish cultural activists. They are the major victims of what appears to be an official campaign to stop the current revival of Jewish culture in the Soviet Union. Their only crime is that they continue to speak out for such basic causes as self determination. freedom of religion. and the right of emigration. Many of these people have been convicted on trumped up charges specifically designed to discredit them. Some have been savagely beaten following their arrests.
