Together. these tragedies have shown us the horrible cost of ignoring oppression and destruction. During the Second World War. many Americans were horrified by what they had learned about Hitlers "final solution" for the Jews. But their ability to raise the matter of the Holocaust was rigidly circumscribed by the antiSemitism and antiimmigrant sentiments in our own country at the time. If we want to prevent another Holocaust. we must redouble our efforts to eradicate antiSemitism and all other forms of discrimination. both in this country and abroad. We must work to educate the public about the need for racial and religious tolerance. so that the pleas of minority groups will never again be discounted because of bigotry.
