We are all mindful of duties such as: search and rescue. vessel inspection. fisheries enforcement. and protection of our Nations coastline. Of late. we have clamored for increases. in: Drug enforcement. illegal immigrant interdiction. and assumption of responsibility for the military defense zone. Allow me to bring to your attention some instances when. once again. the Coast Guard has been. or will be called upon: The rescue of flood victims in Virginia and West Virginia this past winter. the over $2 million mission performed as a result of the shuttle tragedy. the attack last month by a Libyan patrol boat on a Coast Guard telecommunication facility in the Mediterranean and finally. the upcoming Statue of Liberty celebration with an unprecedented massing of vessels of all types in the New York Harbor.
