Soon workers from coast to coast were caught up in a new and intense wave of enthusiasm for the 8hour day. with the excitement reaching a fever pitch on May Day. Hundreds of thousands of workers. male and female. native and immigrant. black and white. poured into Americas streets for peaceful parades and demonstrations. defiantly singing the refrains of the popular "EightHour Day Song": We mean to make things over. We are tired of toil for naught. But bare enough to live upon.
