Latvia. and Lithuania by Soviet forces for over 45 years. the struggle for reestablishing freedom and independence of the Baltic republics continues. The Baltic people today continue to maintain their national identities in the face of cruel oppression and increased Soviet attempts to russify their countries. Baltic refugees and their descendants in the West are faced with an equally important fight to keep the Baltic issue alive in countries that frequently display indifference or ignorance to their plight and that of their countrymen. As you know. the United States has never recognized and does not now recognize the incorporationby force and violence and deportations and assassinations and terrorof Estonia. Latvia. and Lithuania into the Soviet Union. This crime against humanity took place when the Communist Party controlling the Soviet Union joined with its treaty ally.
