Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990178071

Nashpitz in Washington a few months after this release. There was some progress on other fronts. including the release of the prominent Pentacostal leader Lydia Staskevich and the reunification of several SovietAmerican couples. Unfortunately. however. we have yet to see a change in overall Soviet human rights policy as evidenced by increased emigration figures. Yet. the most recent incident in memory. still fresh in our minds. has to be the release of Anatoly Shcharansky from prison after 9 long years on the false charge of treason. I am certain that Solidarity Sunday helped to focus attention on Anatolys plight. and that the ongoing involvement of many of us in Congress helped in keeping pressure to bear.
