By now many are aware of the grim fate the Soviet Union has mapped out for Soviet Jews. The plight of one of my adopted refuseniks. Yuli Edelshtein. is an all too familiar tale of persecution and harassment. Yuli. as a 27yearold resident of Moscow. was denied a visa because his father allegedly had access to secret materials. But Yuli had not seen his father in 20 years. To the Soviets. no pretext is too flimsy to be used to deny Jewish emigration. After his application was denied. the KGB began to harass him. forcing him to leave his job as an English teacher. Yuli refused to be cowed by the KGB.
