I rise today as part of the congressional call to conscience to again bring to the attention of my colleagues the plight of losif Berenshtein. who has been imprisoned in the Soviet Union for over 14 months. In fact. it is a little over 1 year ago today that I first adopted losif Berenshtein and sent a letter cosigned by 70 of my colleagues to Secretary Gorbachev asking that he and his family be allowed to emigrate to Israel and join their family there. I would like to review Mr. Berenshteins story for my colleagues. losif Berenshtein. his wife Fanya and their daughter Yanna. applied for an exit visa to Israel in 1979.
