The 6week Bern meeting should be a clear focus of continuing congressional and U.S. public concerns about Soviet and Warsaw Pact policies maintaining barriers between the peoples of East and West in clear violation of their commitments as signatories of the Helsinki Final Act. The official U.S. delegation to the multilateral conference. led by Ambassador Michael Novak. will address such issues as emigration. divided families. obstacles to family visits and binational marriage. impediments to travel for personal or professional reasons. and interference by East bloc governments with telephone and mail communications. I urge my colleagues in Congress to take an active interest in the Bern meeting and to express their strong support for Ambassador Novaks efforts to conduct a vigorous review of these important issues.
