Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990174498

Mr. Speaker. I am pleased to submit into the RECORD with my colleague and cochairman of the congressional human rights caucus. JOHN PORTER. a statement by Anatoly Shcharansky which appeared in the New York Times yesterday. His comments are especially worthwhile in light of the upcoming international meeting in Bern. Switzerland. regarding emigration and human contact issues. Mr. Shcharansky writes with incredible clarity about a problem which concerns many of us here in Congress: The continuing persecution of Jewish and other political prisoners in the Soviet Union. Writing with the conviction possible only from one who has directly experienced the horrors of his subject.
