Speaker. last month. the World Jewish Congress uncovered evidence that former U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldhelm gravely misled the world about his Nazi background. If the records Implicating Waldhelm In Nazi war crimes are verified. pursuant to section 212(a)(33) of the Immigration and Nationality Act Waldheim should be and would be barred from entering the United States. Today I am Introducing a resolution asking the Attorney General to examine all available evidence regarding Waldheims activities during World War II. to determine whether under the Immigration and Nationality Act Waldheim must be excluded from admission into the United States. The evidence against Waldheim is disturbIngly persuasive. For years. Waldheim claimed that although he served in the German Army during World War II. he never belonged to any Nazi organization. and that he left active duty In 1942 after a leg Injury. He has now retracted these accounts. admitting that he joined two Nazi organizations. including the notorious brownshirts. that he served until 1945 in a German Army command that brutally attacked Yugoslav partisans and engaged in the mass deportation of Greek Jews. and that he participated in "Operation Kozara." during which the Nazis deported some 68.000 peopleincluding 23.000 childrenfrom the Kozara Mountains of western Bosnia. Waldheim insists. however. that he committed no crimes personally. Yet even Waldhelms revised account of his Nazi background does not square with the documentary evidence.
