After Rabbi Hirschs death in 1888 his community. or "kehilla". grew and prospered under the leadership of his soninlaw Rabbi Salomon Breuer and grandson. Rabbi Dr. Jospeh Breuer (18821980). In 1939 Dr. Breuer escaped from Nazi Europe and began to rebuild the kehilla in Washington Heights. the home of the largest community of GermanJewish refugees. This unique community includes a synagoguemodeled after the one destroyed by the Nazis. the Samson Raphael Hirsch elementary and high schoolswith 800 students. a Rabbinic college and teachers seminary for women. bakeries. butchershops. cemeteries. kosher food stores and restaurants. a ritualarlum and social service agencies.
