A recent report by the Permanent Human Rights Commission of Nicaragua states that there are over 6.900 political prisoners in Nicaraguan jailsthis means that Nicaragua has the most political prisoners of any Latin American country. Because of institutionalized human rights abuses. persecution of the Catholic Church. the Nicaraguan Jews. Evangelical groups. political parties. labor unions. Miskito Indians and the private sector. over 200.000 Nicaraguans have become refugees since 1979a number immensely greater than the total refugees from all the years of Somozas preSandinista government.
