Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990167709

The Sandinistas have revoked civil liberties and denied the right to speak. publish. assemble or worship without sanctions or harassment. The only remaining independent newspaper has been shut down and the labor movement denied the right to strike. The Sandinistas themselves have stated that theirs is a "revolution without borders." Should they succeed in toppling the Governments of Costa Rica. El Salvador. Honduras. and Mexico. the United States would undoubtedly experience an immigration problem unparalled in our history. As this military buildup and the repression continues. the Sandinistas have refused to negotiate with the Contras and have no interest in a coalition government. Their sole aim is to consolidate power and eliminate all opposition.
