I rise in strong support of this important resolution to establish a special Senate panel to investigate the Medvid case and to review our overall political asylum procedures. The question at issue here is a very basic one: Will our Government. in a consistent and fair way. continue its historic tradition of offering protection in the United States to those fleeing political oppression. I believe we must. and I believe the American people support this view. A critically. important part of the effort to guarantee the preservation of asylum protections will be the investigation conducted by the special panel into two important matters. First will be its review of the case of the Ukrainian sailor. Miroslav Medvid.
