My grandparents on both sides and countless uncles. aunts. cousins. and other relatives did not survive the Holocaust. and I am sure that had I not been fortunate enough to come here the chance of my survival would have been extremely limited. So on each March 12 I recall. indeed I look forward to the date with anticipation. Those who have had the good fortune to arrive in this country as immigrants. I think. recall the date of our arrival before we recall any other date that we celebrate. it is probably more important as a date to us than our birth date or any other anniversary celebration. I think it ought to be so because it is indeed the occasion and the marking of a rebirth. an opportunity for rebirth which this country has meant to me as it has to so many others who preceded me and who followed me.
