Mr. President. I am pleased to introduce today a joint resolution that authorizes and requests the President of the United States to designate July 4. 1986. as "National Immigrants Day." Honoring 100 years of American independence. the people of Prance dedicated to the people of America the Statue of Liberty. From the base of her pedestal to the tip of her flame. the Lady of Liberty has represented freedom. hope. and opportunity to millions entering New York harbor and to millions throughout the world. She has personally welcomed many of our ancestors and is a lasting memorial to the immigrants who have made this country great. Through the efforts of the citizens of our great Nation. the Statue of Liberty is being restored. The values she represents are precious to us. She belongs to each of us. She. herself. is an immigrant who came to us in the name of liberty. It is only fitting that July 4. 1986. when her torch is relit. also be a time to honor the immigrants she welcomed to our shores. Mr. President.
