Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990156839

I rise today to participate in the 1986 Congressional Call to Conscience on Soviet Jewry. an effort which has been in existence since 1976 and which serves to chronicle and bring badly needed attention to the rights of Jews in the Soviet Union. Senator GEORGE MITCHELL is to be thanked for his effort in coordinating this years Call to Conscience. as is the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. Our plea in this Chamber is for those who seek only the opportunity to worship as they choose and to emigrate to their homeland. Israel. We are. of course. gratified that the Soviets have released Anatoly Shcharansky after many years of imprisonment and torture.
