Afghanistan and Iran. The Soviet Union continues to exert an extreme amount of pressure on Pakistan by its illegal occupation of the country of Afghanistan. The flight of 3 million Afghan refugees. a full onefifth of that countrys population. to safety within Pakistani borders has created a tremendous burden on Pakistans people and their economy. Yet. over 300 refugee camps are wellmaintained and administered to the credit of the Pakistani Government. The ongoing IranIraq conflict is a constant threat to the fragile stability of the entire region. Soviet interests in escalating this conflict also requires the constant attention and resources of President Zias government.
