Mr. Shcharansky is one of the more fortunate Soviet Jews. however. There are still thousands of Jews who are being denied their right to freely practice their religious beliefs or to emigrate. Refuseniks are forced to wait indefinitely for permission to leave the country with no assurance that they will. in fact. ever receive it. Often members of families are permitted to leave. one at a time. Families are needlessly separated for years at a time. Soviet Jews trapped in the Soviet Union during the last few years are increasingly ostracized from the Soviet society. In many instances. once an application for emigration is submitted. the refuseniks are labeled and routinely dismissed from their jobs. suffer the loss of personal property. and risk possible expulsion of their children from colleges or universities. Brutal physical attacks and harassment are not uncommon among the refuseniks. The worlds effort to end the persecution of Jews in the Soviet Union must never be abated.
