Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990154295

It has put all oppressive governments on notice that their repressive actions can no longer take place in obscurity. I would suggest. in fact. that the latest demonstration of that principle is this Nations concern and regret about the recent election in the Philippines. where clearly democracy and the rights of individuals have been undermined. Public opinion substantially assisted in the release of Anatoly Shcharansky. Anatoly Shcharanskys application to emigrate to Israel was rejected in 1973. In the 1970s. he acted as a spokesperson for Soviet Jews and was a member of the Helsinki monitoring group. He was arrested in 1977 for acting only on his right to know.
