Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990153718

Let us focus for a moment on a recent victim of Soviet antiJewish policies. Vladimir Llfshitz of Leningrad. who sits in jail awaiting his trial. where he will be charged with "antiSoviet slander." The evidence being used against him includes a certificate of Israel citizenship and letters of appeal to the Western world. His real crime is simply that he has vocally requested his right to emigrate to Israel. Imagine putting an IrishAmerican in jail for wanting to emigrate to Ireland. or an ItalianAmerican in jail for wanting to emigrate to Italy. I say to the Soviet Union that in their desire to win friends in the world such policies reveal a very paranoid and unhappy nation. I would like to conclude with a statement received two days ago by the Bay Area Council for Soviet Jew3 from Anatoly Shcharansky himself. who. in his own Inimitable way. justified all our efforts: There are no words to adequately express to all of you my utmost thanks for the support you have given to my wife Avital during the many years of the struggle for my freedom.
