Speech #990153600

In its attempt to completely control the Lithuanian people. the Soviet Union has neglected basic human rights. The fundamental freedoms of speech. press and religion are blatantly disregarded. Strict censorship of mail. electronic monitoring of telephone conversa. tions. and jamming of foreign radio broadcasts are some of the tactics employed by the Soviets. Also. freedom of movement both within Lithuania and the ability to emigrate are severely restricted. But despite the Soviet occupation of their homeland. the Lithuanian people have held on to an optimistic view of their nation. The Soviets have harassed. persecuted and even killed in order to maintain control.
