Even after 46 years of Soviet domination and the forced annexation of their country. the Lithuanians still struggle for freedom of the press. religion. speech. and national selfdetermination. And they continue to fight to preserve their own cultural and religious heritage despite centuries of relentless pressure for russificatlon. This too. is a cause for hope. We should also remember that the success of Lithuanian immigrants in this country in preserving their unique cultural heritage has enriched our society immeasurably. Over the last century. Lithuanians could be found working in New Jersey and throughout New England as weavers. and throughout the country as tanners. dockworkers. and tailors.
