Cyprus. Greece. and Irelandareas of the world that have had turbulent political histories but which are home to remarkable and resilient people. The immigrants from those countries have made a unique and invaluable contribution to American society. As a member of the Immigration and Refugee Subcommittee. I went to Israel in part to survey the situation of the Ethiopian Jewish refugees. many of whom were assisted in resettling in Israel by the airlift operation Moses. I also toured the United Nations Relief and Works Agency programs in the Gaza Strip. During my trip I was also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet with a number of Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
