Mr. Speaker. it is with immense pride and pleasure that I rise today to pay tribute to a great American. Antonio Meucci. an Italian Immigrant scientist. The telephone is undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions of the 19th century. Picturing the United States and the world today without telephones is unfathomable. And when Americans ponder this inventions development. usually only one name comes to mind: Alexander Graham Bell. However. I believe that the name Antonio Meucci should ring a bell. According to the Italian Historical Society. on December 28. 1871. Antonio Meucci visited the patent office and filed a temporary patent for his "telefono" invention. 5 years before Alexander Graham Bell.
