Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990139810

Speaker. I rise in support of Senate Joint Resolution 32 which is identical to House Joint Resolution 331. which I introduced on June 27 and which has 144 cosponsors in the House. Senate Joint Resolution 32. which passed the Senate unanimously on May 16. designates September 21. 1986. as "Ethnic American Day." By enacting this resolution. we as representatives of this great Nation of immigrants will convey to the world our pride in the vibrant cultural heritage that ethnic Americans have given to the United States. The passage of this resolution will convey to all the pride we take in our cultural diversity. and it will show how highly we value the contributions of Americans of various ethnic backgrounds to our democratic society. There probably isnt a country in the world today which hasnt contributed at least one citizen to the United States. Our citizens come from the four corners of the Earth. Since the early 19th century. more than 50 million immigrants have found their way to America. Many left their homelands for another chance at lifea life free from spiritual or material deprivation. However downtrodden. they shared one dream: achieving a better life in America.
