Speaker. the 50th anniversary of the death of Komitas Var. tabed (18691935) will be observed in ArmenianAmerican communities throughout the United States and the world on December 22. 1985. Komitas Vartabed. an outstanding musician and member of the clergy. was instrumental in documenting and preserving Armenian church and folk music. He is regarded today as being perhaps the most outstanding musician in the entire history of the Armenian nation. Unfortunately. in April 1915 he was caught up with other Armenian intellectuals in the infamous deportations and mas. sacres. but through the efforts of the American Ambassador. Henry Morgenthau. and the Turkish poet. Mehmet Emin Yurdakul.
