On that date. there was a hurricane situated over New Orleans. It might have been only a tropical storm at that point. But at the very least. this seaman Medvid jumped into the darkness 40 feet off his ship into the waters during a tropical storm and swam to shore. Later that evening Mr. Medvid was interviewed by U.S. Border Patrol agents in New Orleans who communicated to him through Dr. Irene Padoch. an interpreter for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. That communication involving Mrs. Padoch. of course. was by telephone since she was somewhere in New York State at that time.
