A recent New York Times editorial on September 27. 1985. sums up our arguments for the ELA better than I could: Mr. Bennett (the Secretary of Education] is exactly right when he says that American citizens must have a "common language in which to discuss our common affairs. English is the pot in which the melting takes place. Failure to speak and understand the American language hampers any citizens ability to participate in American life." I hardly think that the editors of the New York Times are racist or seek to deprive our immigrants of their cultural heritage. They. like those of us who sponsor the English language amendment. understand the reality of the American dream. Mr.
