Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990118660

Yet. these hopes must not blind us to that countrys continuing war and the suffering of its people. Hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans have fled to neighboring countries or the United States. fearing for their safety. The recent kidnaping of the Presidents daughter. and attacks by the Honduran military on a Salvadoran refugee camp are graphic illustrations of how violence threatens the life of every Salvadoran. Under such conditions. it is imperative for the United States to grant extended voluntary departure status to the Salvadorans who have sought refuge in our country. I commend Chairman MAZZOLI for the hearings he held on this legislation last week. And I urge my colleagues to support the Moakley bill to grant Salvadorans a tempo. rary stay of deportation.
